PVI activities 2023

ACTIVITIES ORGANISED IN 2023

  • Excursion to the IJsseldelta

The excursion to IJsseldelta has unfortunately no report or pictures available.

  • End of the year gathering

The PVI organised the annual End-of-the-Year activity. As per tradition, we started with a warm welcome with coffee and “krentenwegge” for former employees. Some 25 of them gathered in the “Lounge” in the Langezijds buildling, and many of their former colleagues used the option to meet and mingle, making for a busy and lively meeting.

Prof Mark van der Meijde then presented LILa, the acrononym for “Living Innovation Lab”. This initiative of ITC and other UT faculties will provide a unique semi-controlled outdoor setting at the University of Twente campus. Its construction started in 2023, and after its completion, it is going to function as a research, innovation and education lab to enable experimentation and support the development of new skills for students, researchers and professionals. The LILa site will host more than fifteen transdisciplinary experimental sections both above and below ground. Scientific and societal challenges are at the heart of the lab, and will involve scientists from multiple faculties, clustered around different types of experiments and expertise. • Workshop for children painting a clogshoe

On the 14th of July the PVI organised a fun and creative workshop in “clog-shoe” painting. The event was organized in Luz’ painting atelier on a beautiful and sunny afternoon in Enschede. A total of 12 children, both boys and girls painted colourful and creative drawings, either free-hand or with the help of stencils on the white clogshoes. On the nose of the clogshoe a little “windmill” was placed to give it an extra Dutch touch!

  • Trip to the Christmas market in Germany with UTKring

On the 8th of December, leaving early morning, three buses left on their way to the Christmas market in Dusseldorf. With 25 participants of ITC and over 60 participants of the UTkring, it was a good amount of participants.

In Dusseldorf the city had several locations with various stalls selling food, drinks, sweets and a variety of winter/Christmas type products.
Dusseldorf itself also has many shops and museums to visit, which the participants had plenty of time to visit.

At 19.00 in the evening the buses were ready again to head back to Enschede.

  • Moroccan cooking workshop

Initially on the Moroccan cooking workshop should have taken place on the 11th of May, mostly due to a farewell reception planned on the same day. So the workshop took place on a Thursday 22nd of June 2023!

The workshop was organized by a fellow UT colleague Laila at the Twentsche Foodhall. After recommendation of Esther, since Laila also provided this workshop previously for the UTKring members. The costs for the workshop was 35 euros and for non PVI members 70 euros.

Workshop was scheduled from 18:00 – 22:30. Some participants arrived a bit later so we started around 18:30, end time was indeed around 22:30.

We unfortunately got some last minute cancellations, but we were still with 7 participants! Which meant there were plenty of food for everyone and also a lot of leftovers to eat for the next day.

It was a very warm and cosy workshop, during the cooking we could enjoy (unlimited) drinks which all participants enjoyed, sometimes we did forget about this because we were very busy cooking.

During the workshop we were divided in groups of 2-3 and we each got assigned a dish which we could cook together and/or ask for help of others. Laila and her husband helped us during the entire workshop, with tips and guidance on how to make the recipes, but also with cleaning the dishes.

All in all, we all enjoyed it very much, food was great, ambience and the people were all very supportive and nice. A great activity. So next year again and hopefully more people register next time.

  • Sinterklaas celebration with UTKring

On the 25th November It was the time of the year again to celebrate the Sinterklaas event, this year together with the UTkring.

Photographs of the event are available here.

  • Lustrum party - 50 yrs

On Friday October 13, PVI organized its 50th anniversary party in the Gallery at the UT campus. The proximity of the festive location to the offices should have been a trigger to register and attend. Some 90 members and partners (and one little baby) gathered from 7 PM at the cocktail tables. It was a mixture of old and new, young and wise. All came dressed for this special occasion and the costume contest on the theme of the four elements: Air, Water, Fire and Earth.  The costume contest triggered some to pay special attention to their dress, others came dressed in earth colours or in blue, but were certainly not feeling blue at all. Water was anyhow a central theme, with heavy rain pouring down most of the evening. Chit-chat started immediately, but also the posters with photo’s from PVI activities through the years attracted attention and discussion. It was quite difficult to identify the youngsters on many photographs.

At 7.30 chair Esther Hondebrink welcomed the guest sharing a short historic overview of the PVI. We were quite lucky to even have one of the founders amongst the participants. Frans Gollenbeek, back then a fresh young boy, had shared some nice insights, for example that initially the name was PIO for Personeelsvereniging In Oprichting.

The programme included a cocktail/mocktail workshop which started immediately after the welcome by Esther. From 8-10PM people were queuing to either make their own cocktail or get a cocktail. Although the making was under close supervision, some participants did suddenly not know the length of 2 seconds and vodka almost filled their entire cocktail glass. The bar was great success because the cocktails were good and . . .  didn’t cost a penny (for the participants ;-).

    People in polonaise

Later that evening the DJ was replaced by a singer and when he started Sweat Caroline almost no one could sit still and a traditional polonaise moved through the Gallery. When the dust had settled, everyone was asked to make groups for the special pub quiz.

For quite some time participants were enthusiastically discussing and looking for answers. Brain breakers like snippets from google earth and music clips caused turmoil and the competition started to heat up. Sometimes the quiz master even had to step in and lower the tension. Gerrit even got a warning but showed later in the individual quiz (petje op, petje af) that he was quite attentive, finishing first. After the final round the quiz master collected all forms and calculated the standings. The smallest team composed of Jan en Wilma, finished 12th. Wilma received the Quality Streets when Jan was hiding in the bathroom. To the surprise of the quiz master, who did a really nice job, the blue ladies finished 3rd, but the winners were the E-vengers. Lisanne received a diploma as proof to the whole faculty that they were the winners of the special PVI 50 years pub quiz.

During the evening everyone was challenged to vote for the best costume through Wooclap. Soon it was clear that the woman in red, Nona, was at the top of the chart. Wan, who had welcomed many of the guests at the entrance as Neptune/Aquarius, but had changed clothes after the opening, finished 2nd. Both received a nice gift from the chair of PVI.

The PVI board would like to thank everyone who helped to make this lustrum party a success. Unfortunately quite some members had to cancel their participation due to sickness. We wish those a swift recovery and hope to welcome them at the 55th anniversary. The photo album is available. Want to have a look at the posters that were created for the event? • Cricket

On Wednesday Oct 11 a group of, predominantly Indian, students and staff gathered at the UT Baseball pitch for a cricket clinic organised jointly by SAB and PVI. After a warm up throwing the heavy tennisball, batting with a light and heavier bat, the rules of the game were discussed and settled. Apparently this is also part of playing cricket and one of the many reasons why these games take so long ;-). Two teams were formed and played a match of 10 overs of 6 throws. Both matches were won by one team with respectively 77 and 76 runs. During the matches and certainly before and after the matches some impressive throws by designated bowlers were demonstrated.

More photo's can be viewed here. They were all taken and edited by Tobias Bakx. He would appreciate it when you acknowledge him (@tobiephotography) when you use them for special outreach.

  • ITC Sports Day 2023

On a blazingly hot Friday afternoon in July some 170 students, staff and volunteers gathered at the UT campus Sports terrain. After our move from the Hengelosestraat to the campus and the merger of our previous host korfbal Rigtersbleek into ERC, the campus sport facilities and café offered an alternative to organize the ITC Sports Day. Next to regular Volleyball, Soccer, Jeu de Boules and running competitions organized by the PVI, the SAB organized back to school games. Since the field we used was artificial grass and the wind felt like a fohn  the temperatures on the playing field were rather high. Most supporters and back to school participants clustered together at the far end where some shadow would emerge. But the players were enforced to give their best under the blazing sun. Changing the already intense matches sometimes to heated competitions. At a regular basis athletes were instructed to take a break and drink from the taps in the sport centre at quite a distance. That distance from the terrace to the competition area also made it difficult for those seeking shade and refreshment to follow the competitions.

The Jeu de Boules competitions could be challenging as well, but some teams prepared for such situation and arranged their own recovery area.

Assisted and supervised by 2 volunteers from the jeu de Boules club of UT Kring, 6 teams threw their balls on the artificial grass. Some ‘so-called’ experienced players and former champions were complaining that the surface did not comply with regulations (drained foundation layer, semi-paved base layer, and toplayer). But it is the real champion who can master throwing on any surface. Jane & Tarzan scored 34 points and claimed victory before CCC and Boules Eye

The 6 volleyball teams played in two groups to qualify for the second round. Good old referee Karl was frequently replaced by volunteers, to give Karl a well-deserved break. PGM and TAESM won their groups and played the second round against the 2nd ranked to try to qualify for the final. That turned out to be too difficult for PGM. In the final TAESM defeated team Not Sure to claim the victory in the volleyball competition 2023. According to notes on the day GeoHeroes ranked 3rd having defeated PGM (where PGM actually had defeated GeoHeroes in the group stage).

In absence of official referees, the teams playing soccer were asked to provide a referee when not playing. This worked out quite nice and really nice ‘battles were fought’. The sports day organizer had shared a completely wrong playing schedule, but with the help of the captains, players and referees, a correct playing schedule was finished. The 5 teams would all play each other once. The top 4 would play semi finals followed by a final and 3rd/4th place match. The UT Knights were overall winner after winning all their matches.

The 40 running competition attracted 30 participants, giving sufficient body to organize several finals. Even though organized at the end of other competitions and the hot afternoon, some interesting battles were fought. 40m female champion was Yeu Ying. John Ifejube defended his 2022 title successfully in between soccer matches. When the field was almost empty some daredevils started for the 1 mile (1400m) cross country. Since there were some imposed restrictions (we were not allowed to use the natural grass, some fences were closed) the runners were instructed to just lap the artificial grass several times. For quite some time 3 runners stayed together, which was under the really warm circumstances a good choice. With the finish approaching some tried to run away, but it was Gerard who had planned most efficiently and also successfully defended his 2022 title.

By that time BBQ were lit at the terrasse of the sports café and all athletes and supporters were able to replenish themselves. Checkout the photoalbum for more memories.
