PVI activities 2018

In 2007, PvI organised its first “cultural excursion” in cooperation with the ITC Cultural Commission (now sadly defunct). This has become a nice tradition and to celebrate the more then 10 years, we re-visited the location of our very first trip, the Insel Hombroich. Firstly, because it is a wonderful place to enjoy art & nature, and secondly because it too has changed, with the addition of a whole new section “Raketenstation Hombroich”.

On the Friday, 20 participants got into the bus for the trip to the Insel, just south of Düsseldorf. In sharp contrast to the past weeks of great summer weather, we arrived in pooring rain, and started our guided tour huddled under umbrellas and running from pavilion to pavilion….

Luckily our excellent guide improvised a mostly “indoor based” tour, and even better, by the time we got to the restaurant, the rain was giving way to a dry and sometimes even sunny afternoon!

After the typical 'German Farmers' type of lunch buffet in the restaurant, the participants roamed the beautiful park grounds and further exhibitions.

At the end of the afternoon the bus drove us to the new part of the museum: “Raketenstation Hombroich”. Here, on a former NATO missile base we  explored the Langen Foundation building, a complementary collection to the Insel Hombroich Museum.

2018 marked a very special year for ITC in the Batavierenrace. Since 1984 ITC had participated 24 times with a staff/student team in this crazy event. For the specific reason that we would celebrate the 25th participation, we were able to secure funds for two teams; an ITC Batavierenrace alumni team and a student team. Lustrum funds were also available for a special commemorative t-shirt with a revamped Batavierenrace logo. Old alumni runners registered either as runner or as dedicated supporter creating a great spirit in the alumni team and competitive atmosphere between the teams.

The official race usually starts at 12, but recent years the organisation has changed the start time and location of the first stag; 10.30 from Nijmegen center. At 7 PM the frist bus with participants departed to Nijmegen for some administrative activities. At 10 the rest of the two night teams joined and welcomed the first runner at their finish on the campus of Nijmegen University. From Nijmegen the relay race travels through the dark agricultural environment in Germany to Emmerich and ‘s Heerenberg. At around dawn the teams both finished successfully in the small town of Ulft where they would meet the morning teams. It creates a strange atmosphere with anxious morning team runners who just woke up getting ready to start their experience and night runners who suddenly realize that they have gone through a long day and night, get overwhelmed by fatigue, signal a more troublesome bladder while queues in front of mobile toilets have grown to enormous lengths.

One of ITC’s fastest runners, Gerardo Macedo, was unlucky to realize that his stage number 5 was cancelled because some of the official University teams had complained that the route signs had been moved causing them to get lost. Gerardo was on that stage actually 12 minutes faster than Bata alumnus Johannes.

The morning teams have the most beautiful stages, through the blossoming Achterhoek when the sun starts rising and birds start singing. But if you have been anxiously waiting for your alarm to wake you up at 3 PM, that is not what you are experiencing initially. In Barchem the morning teams finished perfectly on time, giving sufficient opportunity for a team picture with both morning and noon teams. Even if the sun had not shined, Barchem would have coloured yellow.

From 11.30 AM the two noon teams started the final stages to bring the relay vest to Enschede. At one point the two teams/runners were actually running together, something which did not happen before and was caused by the fact that the most experienced team and alumni navigator made a terrible navigation mistake causing the alumni team to reach a relay point minutes after arrival of the previous runner. Maybe that is the reason that he was hiding under the yellow cap. The coincidence is however exemplary for the minimal difference in total time between the two teams. Mariana and Anke returned the vests to the Old Market in Enschede. Where two female runners and 2 male runners would take care of the final stages. And what final runners. The Run4Fun student team was represented by Dean Tom Veldkamp. But first Ruosha and Adriana, who especially travelled from TU Delft to Enschede to represent the ITC alumni team, started their 7.4K final stage run. Under really nioce weather circumstances all ITC runners reached the campus and were welcomed by a large and very enthusiastic crowd. For this special occasion, they were asked to carry inflatable globes on their final meters proudly representing the multi-cultural international population.

Op 20 juni vond de jaarlijkse kinderactiviteit plaats. Dit jaar zijn we bij het Miljata Bouwlab geweest dat in de nieuw geopende Performance Factory zit.  MILJATA Bouwlab is zoals het woord zegt, een bouwlab, maar dan voor LEGO.

De kinderen mochten bij aankomst kiezen uit verschillende lego bouwpakketten en deze gaan bouwen. Er waren veel lego pakketten, zowel voor jongens als voor meisjes. Er waren ook voldoende materialen om gewoon zelf iets te bouwen zonder bouwpakket. 

Tussen het bouwen door waren er drankjes en snacks voor de kinderen en na afloop was er voor iedereen een broodje knakworst.

Het was een geslaagde middag!

On the 20th of June the PVI organised the annual childrens activity. This year the activity took place in the Miljata Building lab that is located in the newly opened Performance Factory. The Miljata building lab is a building lab for Lego.

Upon arrival the children could choose to build from many different building sets. There were sets for both girls and boys. The children could also choose to build freely and choose from the many Lego building blocks available. 
There were drinks and snacks available for the children in between the building and afterwards the children ate a bread with sausage.

Everyone enjoyed a fun afternoon!

With more than 150 participants (athletes, supporters and volunteers), the 2018 edition celebrated a huge turn out on an to-be-expected hot Friday afternoon. Luckily the weeks before already measured extremely high temperatures thus all participants were warned to be prepared.

At 4 PM the team competitions in Jeu de Boules, Volleyball and Soccer started with respectively 6, 5 and 4 teams. The 40 meter sprint track was opened for qualification runs and a special hurdle running clinic for children attracted a nice number of enthusiastic crowd. Frequent breaks in all schedules ensured that all athletes had sufficient time to replenish and rest. Despite the warm weather some heated battles were fought on the blistering soccer pitches. The Jeu de Boules competition could use more shaded and relaxing playgrounds, but nevertheless competition was fierce and objective referees were called upon for challenging decisions. Meanwhile the children and many others attempted several 40 meter sprints.

Running was apparently very attractive, perhaps due to its shady position; 83 attempts were recorded for a record 37 participants. For sure this called for several finals to determine the 40m champions. Under loud applause of supporters the girls fought for the championship until the finish line. After video analysis Rosalba was declared champion, followed by Roos and Linden. Almost as close was the finish inn the boys final, won by Fedde just before Malte. Fastest qualifier Arturo decided to concentrate for the 1 Mile long distance run. On the basis of qualification times, it was undisputed which female was entitled to be the champion since Lucy was the only qualifier with a sub 7 seconds time (6.60). But at the start in the final, she tripped, fell and saw Beatriz and Ruoyun Liu fighting for the glory. This battle was concluded with a win for Beatriz. While the soccer competition was still going on, Yibou could not participate in the men’s final. Andy and Nick lined up and sprinted away after the “Go”. Five and a half seconds later Andy crossed the finish line first.

After the qualification matches in the Volleyball competition the referees had to do some math since three teams ended up with 2 wins. Even without calculator, smartphone, Karl and Dick quickly calculated some ratios to find out that “Loose a set, win a match” and “Smashing Dynamite” had to play the final to determine 1^st and 2^nd place. During qualifications the “Smashing dynamites” clearly won the battle from “Loose an set win a match”. In the final this was completely turned around and “Loose a set win a match“ won with a clear margin, 26-19, to claim the title in the volleyball competition.

The soccer competition did not have a final; the winner was calculated based upon the scores of all games, each team playing every other team. In the end the competition coordinator did not know which team played which team because players switched from team to team during the competition and other teams than scheduled played each other. Despite the turmoil it was clear that one team had won all their matches; the Waterboys. Looking at the results you might wonder whether they managed to get their goal blocked with concrete since the did conceive only 3 goals! 2^nd and 3^rd finished team “Field 1” and “Dark Knights”.

In the final rounds of the Jeu de Boules competition teams got heated up despite the shady competition grounds. A convincing win of CCC in one of their last matches did bring them in the lead to win the competition, followed by Jeu de ESA and Team Rocket.

Despite the warm circumstances, another record-breaking number of participants lined up for the 1 Mile long distance run. Lined up, but not all finished. The dropouts luckily did not suffer major medical problems but were clever enough to throw in the towel. Most positions were taken after one round except rank 1; Gebresealassie was leading Felipe. Both were excellent Batavierenrace alumni, so we were looking forward to an exiting second round. Until the final corner nothing was settled but when Felipe kicked in his final sprint Gebre could not follow and had to live with an excellent time for silver. The female competition was less exiting since Beatriz was the only female daredevil to finish the 1 Mile. A unique result claiming victory in the 40m sprint and the 1 Mile run.

At around 6.30 PM the BBQ were fired up by the staff from Korfbal vereniging Rigtersbleek for around 120 hungry athletes and supporters. Competition results were debated, salad, meat and French bread consumed when the winners of all competitions were called forward to receive their rewards.

In 2018 the PV Intercontact celebrated its 45th anniversary. The memorable party for all members was organised in “De Jaargetijden” in het Volkspark in Enschede. A scenic location if you arrived just before sunset. In total 159 young and old members and invitees arrived and were welcomed with a spectacular drink, a lottery ticket and a voucher for the Roulette.

Soon they were surprised by the sound of the Pianoco’s, a 3-man band making sound as if they were with at least 6 musicians. They played well known songs adding their own spicy flavour. Talking about food, the guests were presented 9 different dishes at regular intervals during the so-called walking dinner. The chairperson of the PVI, Ton Mank, explained how that would work and also that there would be 2 prices; one for the highest score at the Roulette and one for the lottery. Both winners would be announced at the end of the evening.

This caused a rush to the Roulette table, and also motivated the guest to stay and enjoy. To burn some of the 9-dish calories Rico Latino passed by to give a Latin style dance clinic. The dance floor was too small to accommodate all voluntary pairs to make their sexy moves. On top Rico was allowed to announce the best dancing couple, or the couple who demonstrated the biggest improvement during the clinic. Ms Chauhan and partner were the lucky ones. The best gambler at the roulette table was Ralf Platvoet. The lottery was obviously decided by a draw and Ms Tina Tian was the lucky winner with the ticket of Yolla Al Asmar. At some tables the conversations continued while the Pianoco’s played their last songs. A little bit more space became available at the dance floor until the farewell.

 2018 was een lustrumjaar voor onze vereniging want we bestonden 45 jaar. We vierden daarom feest op vrijdagavond 19 oktober in het paviljoen “de Jaargetijden” in het Volkspark in Enschede. Het werd een gezellig feest met 159 leden en hun partners. Bij aankomst kreeg een ieder, bestuursleden uitgezonderd, een genummerd lootje en een kaart om roulette mee te spelen. Het was even wennen aan het volume van de livemuziek van The Pianoco’s, die de hele avond vele leuke en bekende nummers speelden. Onze voorzitter Ton Mank sprak een welkomswoordje waarin hij ook uitlegde wat er die avond allemaal te beleven zou zijn zoals het zogenaamde “walking diner” van negen gangen dat aan de sta en zittafels door de bediening werd uitgeserveerd. Ook dat iedereen een prijs kon verdienen met de hoogste winst gemaakt aan de roulettetafel of door veel progressie te tonen tijdens de latin style dansworkshop van Rico Latino. Het werd een gezellig feest waarvan de foto’s op de PVI website kunnen getuigen. De beste roulettespeler bleek Ralf Platvoet te zijn en het beste danspaar Ms Chauhan and partner. Zij kregen elk een aardige boekenbon als prijs.

Aan de reacties te horen lijkt het voor velen een geslaagd feest te zijn geweest want velen bleven tot het einde. De loterij werd beslist door een trekking waarbij Tina Tian het winnende nummer bleek te hebben van Yolla Al Asmar en de hoofdprijs won. Vermoedelijk bleef het feest binnen de marges van het in vijf jaar gespaarde lustrum budget.

Op vrijgadag16 november hebben we een Bok/speciaal bier proeverij georganiseerd bij de nieuwe locatie van Brewspub Stanislaus Brewkovitch aan de Stadsgravenstraat 59 Enschede (voormalig gebouw van de Menistenkerk, en latere uitgaansgelegenheid: Revelation).

De opkomst was uitstekend te noemen, maar liefst 36 dorstige deelnemers hadden zich aangemeld voor deze proeverij. De deelnemers kregen bij binnenkomst een neutraal biertje: Toontje Lager’.

Onder leiding van de ervaringsdeskundige in speciale bieren Rocco Chin werd het e.e.a. uitgelegd over de smaak, kleur, helderheid, koolzuurgehalte, schuimkraag, reuk, alsmede de herkomst, historie, e.d. van een aantal zorgvuldig uitgekozen speciale bok/speciale bieren.

De bieren die we geproefd hebben hadden de illustere namen zoals: ‘Bockie Wonderland’, ‘Winterblues’, ‘Bock de Cashbah’, en ‘All Black’. Dit zijn zeker géén doorsnee donkere biertjes! Tijdens de bierproeverij werden er kleine versnaperingen geserveerd, passend bij het type bier ter stimulering van de smaakpapillen.

Het was voor een aantal deelnemers soms wel even doorproeven voordat de smaakpapillen de biertjes op hun waarde konden inschatten. De aanvankelijke zure gezichten bij de eerste slok, veranderde langzaam tot mm…, toch niet slecht bij nader inzien!

Het was een heel geslaagde proeverij en degenen die nog even nableven, vielen met hun neus in de boter, ze werden ter plaatse verrast door muzikale optredens in het kader van de landelijke rondreizende muziekfestival: ‘De Popronde’

Vast op het PVI lijst van activiteiten staat het Sinterklaasfeest. De goed heilig man komt graag op het ITC en vertoeft er graag een paar uurtjes van zijn tijd.

De kinderen komen rond 2 uur binnen en kunnen alvast wat van de spanning afreageren in het springkussen at door Roland is opgezet in het restaurant. Ook werden de kinderen geschminkt als vlinder of ander diersoort.

Om 3 uur werd Sinterklaas door de Dean Tom Veldkamp, in gezelschap van de Managing Director Erna Leurink en de Vicevoorzitter van het College van Bestuur Mirjam Bult, officieel welkom geheten. Sinterklaas was echter slechts met één van de 3 Pieten!? Waar waren de andere 2 (vorig jaar wilden ze ook al de snor drukken door ‘thuis te gaan werken’!!....Ja, ja…). Op dat moment kreeg WelkomsPiet net een telefoontje van de ‘missing’ Pieten. Door de live verbinding konden wij op het grote scherm de zoektocht van de Pieten naar het ITC meemaken….. op het Universiteitsterrein!!?? Wat bleek: de Pieten hadden gehoord van de ‘verhuizing’ van het ITC naar de nieuwe locatie op de campus, dus daar waren ze op dat moment op zoek naar het nieuwe onderkomen van het ITC!! Inmiddels ware de Pieten onderweg en kwamen gelukkig al snel binnen en werden al zingend door de kinderen onthaald.

Zoals gebruikelijk was er weer een actief programma in elkaar gedraaid voor de kinderen. Onder leiding van Teresa Brefeld deden de kinderen samen met de ouders een workshop: ‘Dierendans’ in de fitnessruimte. Ook de Pieten lieten zich niet onbetuigd en swingden er lustig op los en Sinterklaas probeerde gedistingeerd op het ritme te bewegen, met name bij tijdens de apendans.

Vervolgens, terug in het restaurant, konden de kinderen creatief bezig zijn met het knutselen van 4 thema’s, gelinkt aan de Europese steden die je met de trein aandoet vanaf Madrid, via Parijs, Brussel, Amsterdam naar Enschede. De kinderen konden respectievelijk een nieuwe mijter maken voor Sinterklaas (Madrid), de Eifeltoren met bouwplaat maken, (Parijs) het Atomium nabouwen (Brussel) en/of een tulp vouwen (Amsterdam). Er werden prachtige bouwsels gemaakt.

Om 4 uur was het tijd om de kinderen hun cadeau uit de delen en nog wat Sinterklaasliedjes te zingen.

Het was weer fijn om muzikaal ondersteunt te worden door het prachtige accordeonspel van Jan Hendrikse, bedankt Jan, en natuurlijk alle vrijwilligers die zich hebben ingezet om er een leuke middag van te maken voor de kinderen.

Het is traditie dat op het einde van het jaar de oud-ITCers worden uitgenodigd om naast elkaar te ontmoeten en nieuwtjes uit te wisselen ook een inspirerende spreker uit te nodigen. Natuurlijk ontbrak Karl niet om alvast het jaar ‘uit te blazen’.

Ditmaal hebben we Jeroen Verplanke bereid gevonden een interessant initiatief te presenteren over het fenomeen: Mapping Event.

Jeroen gaf een heldere uitleg over de achtergrond van het vergaren van geografische informatie d,m.v. Crowdsourcing, in het bijzonder van Open Street Map ten behoeve van het maken van zo gedetailleerd mogelijke geografische bestanden. Bijvoorbeeld voor het Rode Kruis om b.v. toegangswegen te vinden om zo snel en efficiënt mogelijk een route te bepalen voor een moeilijk te bereiken locatie om noodzakelijke hulp te kunnen bieden.

Dat de applicatie Google Maps soms beperkte geografische informatie bevat werd goed in beeld gebracht met het resultaat van crowdsourcing in het project Dar Ramani Huria, een sloppenwijk in Dar es Salaam, waar in samenwerking met de lokale bevolking een zeer gedetaileerd geografisch bestand werd gerealiseerd.

Uitleg werd gegeven dat eigenlijk iedereen zijn of haar nuttige bijdrage kan leveren door zich aan te sluiten bij het Open Street Map initiatief, b.v. met het digitaliseren van wegen, wateren of gebouwen.

Na afloop van de lezing hebben de deelnemers daad bij woord gevoegd en zijn de oud ITCers zelf aan de slag gegaan met het gebruikersvriendelijke programma. Er moest wel even een account worden aangemaakt op de aanwezige laptops en men kon aan de slag gaan in een van te voren uitgekozen doelgebied. In de korte tijd die beschikbaar was is er slechts een klein gedeelte daadwerkelijk gerealiseerd. Maar met het aangemaakte account kan men ten aller tijden zelf thuis doorgaan. Het was een leerzame ochtend met een goede link wat men ook op het ITC mee bezig is.

Zoals elk jaar weer staat het bezoek aan de (Duitse) Kerstmarkt op het programma. Dit jaar zijn we met een volle bus naar Keulen gereden, waar we werden gedropt, pal naast de Dom van Keulen. De heenreis beloofde niet veel goeds, het regende pijpenstelen, maar eenmaal aangekomen op de plaats van bestemming was het droog, maar wel wat guur door de koude wind.

Er was ruim voldoende tijd om bij de vele stalletjes die van alles verkopen aan traditionele waren rond te kijken, maar ook om te eten (lees: Bratwurst) en drinken (lees: Glühwein / Bier) op verschillende plekken in en nabij de grote Keulse winkelstraten. En natuurlijk ook op het grote plein voor en naast de Dom van Keulen.

Tegen 20:00 uur werd het nog wel even spannend of iedereen het wel op tijd zou halen, maar met 10 minuten vertraging gingen we weer met een volle bus retour naar Enschede.
