PVI activities 2016

Op 27 januari 2016 vertrok , om 08:15, een bus met 27 oud- en huidige ITCers naar het KNMI in de Bilt. De missie van het KNMI is in het kort: Onze samenleving beschermen tegen natuurgeweld en dit geconcentreerd op weer, klimaat, klimaatsveranderingen en seismologie.  Het instituut valt onder het Ministerie voor Infrastructuur en Milieu.

Net na 10:00 uur werd de groep hartelijk welkom geheten door Prof. Gerard Steenhoven – hoofddirecteur van het KNMI. Sinds recentelijk is Gerard Steenhoven professor aan onze ITC Faculteit (bij de ESA Afdeling). Hij is ook samen met Victor Jetten promotor van Janneke Ettema, thans staflid op het ITC en de initiatiefneemster voor deze PVI excursie.

Onder het genot van een kopje koffie vertelden twee enthousiaste oud stafleden van het KNMI, Jaap Bot en Wil van Dijk, het een en ander over de geschiedenis van het KNMI, het weer, en klimaatverandering. Het is tegenwoordig mogelijk om voor de komende vijf dagen een weersvoorspelling te geven met een hoge betrouwbaarheid.  Na een ruim uur presentaties, en vele vragen van de ITCers, bezochten we het seismologie paviljoen en het instrumentenmuseum van het KNMI.

Het regende de hele ochtend behoorlijk, maar net voor de lunch stopte het dan toch plensen (met dank aan?). Dit betekende dat we de instrumenten in het nabije het waarneemveld konden gaan bestuderen. Een verscheidenheid aan instrumenten werd aan ons gedemonstreerd. Velen daarvan zijn standaard voor alle weerstations in Nederland en over de hele wereld.

Als afsluiter gaf Gerhard Houtgast ons nog een presentatie over de recente aardbevingen (o.a. veroorzaakt door de gasboringen) in Nederland. Gerard wilde ons graag nog het een en ander vertellen over tsunami’s – maar hier was helaas geen tijd meer voor.

De jaarvergadering op 24 februari 2016 was natuurlijk allereerst bedoeld om met de leden het jaar 2015 te bespreken, de begroting voor 2016 vast te stellen en plannen voor 2016 door te nemen. Maar voor het vereniging was er nog iets belangrijks; afscheid van maar liefst 4 zeer gewaardeerde door de wol geverfde rvaren en entousiaste bestuursleden. Zowel Lyande Eelderink als Michel Erdmann namen afscheid ivm (hun) andere werkzaamheden evenals Gerrit Olde Hendrikman (pensioen) en Jan de Ruiter.

Voor Jan is er al een nieuw bestuurslid gevonden die ook de oud itcers connectie zal kunnen bewaken. Oud voorzitter Boudewijn 'schikt' zich met liefde in die rol. Voor de activiteiten en ideeën die Lyande, Gerrit en Michel coordineerden en inbrachten wordt nog gezocht naar interne en externe oplossingen.

Jaarverslag, jaarrekening en begroting werden besproken en goedgekeurd. Waarvoor met name dank aan de penningmeester en de kascommissie. Er werden veel potentiele activiteiten door de leden voorgesteld. Binnenkort zal het bestuur met een overzicht komen wanneer we welke activiteiten denken te gaan uitvoeren. Zoals elk jaar is het credo: "Voor elk wat wils".

Op woensdag 8 juni gaf Mark van der Meijde een lezing over zijn recente werk in Botswana getiteld “The Botswana seismic adventures”. De lezing werd in het engels gegeven en alle studenten, staf en PVI-leden en Buitenleden waren uitgenodigd. Ondanks de instituutsbrede aankondiging bleef het aantal geinteresseerden op dertig steken misschien deels door het fraaie weer buiten.

Mark, sinds jaren bij ons als geofysicus en sinds kort professor in de ESA afdeling, legde uit hoe seismologie werkt en welke informatie daarmee verkregen kan worden over de structuur en de geodynamica van de aarde in de diepere ondergrond van Botswana. In dit deel van het Afrikaanse continent  waar nog veel vragen zijn over de opbouw van de aardkorst, startte Mark een ambitieus programma om 23 seismometers te installeren verspreid over het hele land. Dat bleek geen eenvoudige opgave want het land is groot, zeer dun bevolkt, met tropische delta’s, woestijnen en onbegaanbare binnenlanden. De wegen zijn schaars en veelal onverhard waardoor het project meer ook een seismo safari genoemd kan worden. Naast beelden van groot wild liet Mark ook zien hoe de seismische stations werden opgebouwd in krappe onderdegrond geplaatste watertanks of kleine gebouwtjes veelal op het terrein van scholen zodat er enig toezicht op gehouden kon worden. Ondanks alles slaagde het plan en werken de seismometers nagenoeg allemaal.  Het project is een fraaie  samenwerking met de geologische dienst van Botswana waar ook enkele ITC alumni werken. De eerste resultaten kunnen al enkele bestaande ideeën over de diepere ondergrond bevestigen en er wordt nog veel meer van verwacht. De volgende stap is het aanbrengen van voorzieningen zodat de nu werkende 22 stations op afstand uitgelezen kunnen worden in plaats van lange reizen naar alle locaties om de metingen ter plekke uit te lezen. Het safari gedeelte in het fraaie Botswana gaat dan wel wat minder worden in dit wetenschappelijke onderzoek.

Er waren flink wat vragen en daar ging Mark mee door om die te beantwoorden tijdens de drankjes na afloop. Met dertig belangstellenden was voor er voor iedereen genoeg.

Op 1 december 2016 vertrokken we met 33 PVI-leden een introducees in een bus naar Zwolle naar Museum de Fundatie. Aldaar bezochten we de tentoonstelling “Zie de mens – 100 jaar, 100 gezichten”.

In 100 werken van onder meer Kokoschka, Brancusi, Schad, Picasso, Nussbaum, Bacon, Goldin, Trecartin, Dumas, Richter en Rauch toont ‘Zie de mens’ hoe kunstenaars er de afgelopen eeuw in zijn geslaagd via de schijnbaar eenvoudige, overzichtelijke vorm van het portret de rijkdom en complexiteit van de moderne wereld op te roepen. ‘Zie de mens’ was samengesteld door kunstcriticus Hans den Hartog.

Uitgerust met “groene” of “roze” koptelefoons werden we in 2 groepen door het Museum rond geleid en konden we afwisselend de Nederlandstalige gids of de Engelstalige gids beluisteren via onze koptelefoon.

Na het museumbezoek was er een gezellig samenzijn met drankjes en hapjes in Cafe Fove tegenover het museum. Tegen 18:30 gingen we met 33 PVI-leden en introducees weer terug naar Enschede.

Weer een geslaagde culturele excursie.

The cultural excursion to Museum de Fundatie, had many faces. Actually 100 of them including work of Kokoschka, Schad and Picasso. The title of the exposition was "Zie de mens" and these portrets gave an overview of a century of development of the welth and complexity of the modern world. 33 participants had registered and moved around with colourful headsets through the museum listening to Dutch or English explanations. The excursion ended with cosy get together for a snack and a drink.

On the basis of the registrations the organisation was anticipating an exciting ITC Sports Tournament on Friday July 8th. More than 150 students and staff members registered for the various activities (sports, supporting and/or barbeque). The local host, Korfbal Rigtersbleek, was timely informed  about the expected huge crowd and prepared to welcome the participants at 3.45.Photos taken by W. Kock and supporters who were awarded for their unthusiasm are available here.

The early starting time was selected to enable the scheduled competitions to finish on time before the Barbeque. The Dean of the Faculty, Prof. Tom Veldkamp, and manging director Mrs. Erna Leurink were present to officially open the tournament. At that time the volleyball competition had already started but for the soccer competition some teams were still waiting for their players.

The soccer competition had a tough schedule with 7 teams who were scheduled to play each other on two fields. Two retired ITC staff members, Jan de Ruiter and Jaap Duim,  were attracted as experienced referees. Given the tough schedule additional referees were scheduled to give the senior referees some time for refreshment. Next to illustrious teams as “Just an Unbeatable Team” and “Exotic Underdogs“ also the famous “Tukkerteam” was present. The latter has been participating in various compositions in the ITC sports tournament for several years and has a history of wins. And certainly remarkable the all-female team “Female Soccer” had registered for this competition. Despite the fact that they were not able to contract the best female soccer player, Evelien Roest, they played some fantastic games and scored several beautiful goals.

At the time that most other competitions had finished including the (almost) 2 kilometer run the final ranking could be established. The 1st rank was undisputedly for  . . .  the unbeatable team, but for the 2nd and 3rd rank some calculations were required. Perhaps in hurry for the BBQ or in an attempt to prevent any suspicion for subjectivity Jaam Duim calculated team “Sporter” on 2nd place and “Tukkerteam” on 3rd place (whereas a review of the calculation back in the office revealed it should be reversed).

In the volleyball competition the 4 teams originally registered also were scheduled to play each other. The “Funky Kangaroos” had former professional long-tall Jacob Onyimbi in their ranks. Upon his arrival Jacob requested the organisation whether the net would be raised? Which of course we did not. Therefore Jacob did not have to jump a lot, actually not at all, to help his team claiming victory after victory. It does help a lot when you have one exceptionally good player to whom you can play every ball from any corner knowing (s)he will be able to receive, recover and score. Only “CvWV” volleyball team could give them a bit of opposition in the Poole phase, to find out in the final that “Funky Kangaroos” were a different league. A bigger surprise was the battel for 3rd. Voley4Fun who had not won any match in the Poole phase raised their performance incredibly to beat the “Drago Flies” with the smallest margin. Referees Dick van der Zee and Karl Grabmaier did not have to take tough decicions.

Whether the large number of registrations for the Jeu de Boule competition has something to do with the ageing of the Faculty staff cannot be undisputedly confirmed since only 3 of the 9 teams registered contained staff. Five more teams were composed of student couples and Rigtersbleek hired two grannies to complete the competition. After 4 rounds a final ranking was established. Overall winners were not the grannies, not the defending champions “Chicos con cojones” (2nd place 2016) but a student team called “Springer” (students Potiracha and Rana) having won all 4 matches. “Two B” with Wang and Huang finished 3rd.

The running competition had as usual 2 disciplines; the 40 meter sprint and the 2 km run. However this year both disciplines were adapted due to local circumstances. The 40 meter sprint was moved to a more even surface (though with slightly taller grass than years before) and set out with measure tape. The 2 km run (previously closer to 1800 meters than 2km) was routed closer to the canteen and had a slightly shorter length of 1600 meter. During the qualification period for the 40 meter finals many students and staff gave their utmost best and attempted to qualify (or at least improve their time). In total 69 attempts were registered but when the qualification period was closed some athletes were frustrated because they could not attempt (another time). In the children’s competition Stella Ostermann and Stefani were inexhaustible attempting respectively 5 and 4 times. Maria, Malte and Kaden did take it a bit more easy but were also able to score nice results.

In the female competition we witnessed a tough battel for the finals. Maria Buitrago and Evelien Roest qualified without a problem (6.50s and 6.56s) but Dio Dinta (6.74s) was challenged by Isabel Cecilia Contreras Acosta (6.79s and 6.77s). Once again it showed that running a final, a direct battle female against female, is different from qualification. Evelien showed to be the toughest and fastest beating Maria on the finish line.

Runjie Huang (what’s in a name) qualified for the male finals with the fastest time (5.52s) before Jacob (5.69s) and Riswan (5.76s). This qualification was quite exciting since Kennedy, Steve and Harrison ran 5.78s (some even several times). In the final Runjie “Jason” proved that his qualification was not a coincidence and perhaps his experience in track and field helped him. Jacob, remarkably fast with his very long legs, finished 2nd followed by always smiling Riswan.
The Bakx family ran out of competition. Son Tobias was a little slower than in 2015 (5.22s) but anyhow much faster than his father “master” Wan (5.52s).

The registration for the 1 mile run was pretty impressive but unfortunately quite some competitions were still ongoing at the time the race was started. In total 12 females and males cruised the premises of Rigtersbleek. Favourite this year was not a male, but Sophie Crommelinck. Sophie is a PhD who a couple of weeks after arrival at ITC was already hired by the UT Batavieren race team.  In the first round she sort of battled with two south/central American males, Bernardo and Manuel, and Steve Kibet. Soon to show that she was of a different planet speeding away and leaving the males in despair. She finished in a very impressive time of 5min 37.3 seconds. Unfortunately we cannot directly compare this time to the ones ran by the females in previous years but it is estimated to be 25 seconds faster than the fastest female ever. Bernardo, announced as Gabriel, but Gabriel is the name of his wife who studies at ITC (do you still follow this?), finished as fastest male in 6min 02.9.

Between 6 and 9 PM all athletes and supporters enjoyed the nice barbeque under then quite nice meteorological circumstances. Stories were told, matches reviewed while grilling the meat and eating the salads and French bread. Thanks to the help of more than 15 volunteers from ITC and Rigtersbleek we can conclude that the ITC annual Sports Tournament was once again a great success.

On Friday 24 June a group of 14 enthusiastic children participated in the workshop “Paint a Fable”, organized and taught by Luz and her husband Johan. They had prepared their studio and the needed materials for the art work.

The children started of course with some nice drinks and snacks while exploring the nice garden with flowers.
The workshop started with Johan telling two fables, namely the fable of the hare and the turtle and their running competition followed by the fable of the fox and the stork eating from a plate and from a bottle. After this introduction Luz explained the contents of the workshop and all children started drawing animals and paintings in most beautiful colors. After a short break, they painted 3D foxes, storks, hares and turtles that were later on decorated with eyes, wool, feathers etc.

Fourteen dare devils registered for the Clinic track cycling on November 14 in the Omnisport center in Apeldoorn. It was a mixture of young, old and older participants with no, little and much cycling experience including one daring female. And they were all able to conquer the steep slopes (43 degrees!) of the cycling track.

After a short welcome and coffee or thee, perhaps a stronger liquor would have been more appropriate, the group got changed into a diversity of sports cloths. Although some jokes were shared in the dressing room, you could very well notice a slight increase in anxiety. The information which was provided prior to the clinic that they would be cycling on bicycles without brakes was at least one of the major causes. In addition to the special circumstances; they would be cycling in the National indoor cycling arena which had been the scene for a track cycling World cup just the weekend before.
Staff from cycling club de Adelaar managed to get everyone on an appropriately sized bike with optimal saddle height. Persona pedals were installed for those who carried their own equipment. Intimidating a little bit the others whose shoes got taped to prevent shoe laces from getting hooked into the wheels and chain. The coaches explained a little bit about the clinic, the track and track cycling in general. About the track; the slope in the two bends is 43 degrees and has a width of 9 meters, indicating that when cycling at the top you would be cycling 6 meter above the floor.! O tires which were inflated to the extreme, leading to a very small area of contact between the rubber and the wooden track.

During the first session the group was split into two and cycled on the flat track with instruction to practice breaking. Breaking? There were no breaks! Correct, that is why they had this exercise. To slow down (not break) they had to push on the ascending pedal and prevent to push on the descending pedal. Trying to make a skidding stop was impossible and actually forbidden; the cyclist would be launched into an orbit. As soon as everyone got used to this the trainers took the group up higher on the track. First the dark blue section, to the black line, to the red line. Continuously increasing the speed to make up for the increasing slope and height. Already in the first session quite many were able to reach the blue line, almost half way the slope, and stepped of their bikes as if professionals already. But the hardest part was yet to come. The trainers recognized who needed a little bit more support to cross borders (and lines) and used the break for some personal coaching and practice. A very nice gesture from the trainers, and well done Wieteke!

In the second session the groups were formed again but now by signal from the trainer you were instructed to sprint as fast as possible from your group to the other group cycling half a round away. Seems and sounds easy, but it isn’t. Since the group to chaise and catch up with is cycling also with a considerable speed. Damn, quite some energy was used in that session and the 2nd break was definitely needed te recover, drink and eat. Would there still be energy left for the final individual sprint time trail?

Before the time trial both groups were first taken on the track again to conquer the blue line and maybe even get higher. And higher, and higher. Don’t look down, just follow your predecessor and speed, speed, speed. To reached the top! What a magnificent feeling, cruising a 45 km/hr at the top of the track. Feeling the acceleration going down, the wind in your face, the thrill.

In the final 15 minutes the sprint time trail was organized. Pumping the bike after a standing start one round of 250 meters. All managed this within 30 seconds. Some got close to 20; obviously the youngsters (semi-pro Per and teenager Tobias) but also a couple of oldies (well done Roy Oude Lenferink and Wan Bakx).

At the closing drink and snack the experiences were shared and blown up here and there. But at least all could genuinely state that they had conquered the slopes of 43%, way steeper than the Alpe d’Huez or Angliru.

De eindejaar activiteit voor oud ITC medewerkers had na het gezellige samenzijn dit keer een entrepreneurial tintje. ITC's eerste spin-off CEO, Valentijn Venus, zou een kijkje geven in de wereld van zijn bedrijf RAMANI en de Cheetah app.

In de annex verzamelden zich een kleine dertig oud collega's inclusief de herstellende Mrs Vörgers (zie verslag van bezoek aan de kerstmarkt). Naast jong gepensioneerden waren er ook tal van oude en zeer oude gepensioneerden aanwezig. Prof. Zonneveld had zijn scootmobiel ergens in de ITC tuin moeten parkeren om via de brug in het Restaurant te komen. De catering liep af en aan om meer kopjes en koffie te brengen. Met enorm veel enthousiasme werden gesprekken aangeknoopt en hartelijke groeten uitgewisseld. Het kostte dan ook enige moeite om de menigte in beweging te krijgen naar het Auditorium voor de lezing.

Valentijn deed zijn uiterste best om de soms wat technische inhoud aan de aanwezigen te presenteren. Het werd snel duidelijk dat het starten en runnen van een spin-off, Ramani, geen eenvoudige klus is; je kunt wel ideeën hebben maar moet het uiteindelijk ook aan de man brengen, financiering rond krijgen én werknemers regelen. Inmiddels heeft Valentijn een aantal mensen in Indonesië voor zijn bedrijfje werken. Dat was ook de reden dat de presentatie in het Engels werd gegeven; Valentijn wilde deze presentatie delen met deze groep internationale medewerkers.

Een van de applicaties waar het allemaal mee begon is Cheetah. Een applicatie voor transporteurs van gevoelige voedselproducten waarin ze informatie kunnen delen met betrekking tot de kwaliteit van de wegen en corruptie op de route. De kwaliteit wordt bepaald met behulp van de sensoren die in mobiele telefoons zitten, de corruptie is gebaseerd op input van de chauffeurs. Op basis van de informatie kunnen chauffeurs andere routes kiezen om de producten op de plaats van bestemming te krijgen.

Cheetah is gebouwd op basis van de door Valentijn ontwikkelde Maps API "Ramani". Met deze API kun je ook eenvoudig toegang verschaffen tot Sentinel data van de ESA.

Na afloop van de uitgebreide presentatie vonden vele deelnemers hun weg naar het ITC restaurant voor een wel verdiende lunch en wat bleek; het aantal aanwezige oud-ITC'ers was op deze donderdag vlak voor kerst groter dan het aantal huidige werknemers.

On Thursday December 22 some 30 old ITC employees gathered in the annex for the end of the year meeting with their old friends enjoying each other’s company and coffee with Christmas bread. After this meet and greet ITC staff member Valentijn Venus introduced his spin-off company RAMANI. With the help of Indonesian employees they develop a Maps API "Ramani" with which for example one can create simple access to Sentinel data from ESA. But it is also a platform on which the application Cheetah is being developed. With Cheetah transporters of vulnerable food products register automatically the quality of the road network (registrations of vibrations by sensors in mobile telephones) and manually the status of corruption along these roads. The almost real time data can help truck drivers to select different routes to their destination.
Valentijn showed that having these ideas is not sufficient to grant a successful spin-off; securing financial support and obtaining and managing dedicated employees are amongst the other competences which you require.

Zoals altijd ging de PVI op kerstmarkt-bezoek en dit jaar was dat op 16 december naar Düsseldorf. We waren met veertig deelnemers inclusief een baby en de bus was zoals vanouds van Paul Kürten.

Vanaf de parkeerplaats aan de Rijn was het een korte wandeling naar de eerste kerstmarkt in in de oude stad en vandaar waren er overal stalletjes meer in de richting van het modernere winkelcentrum. Het was gezellig druk en gelukkig niet erg koud.

Af en toe kwamen we elkaar tegen waarbij enkele van ons met veel tassen! Na afloop, bij de bus, bleek dat een van ons, mevrouw Vörgers, gevallen was en naar het ziekenhuis was vervoerd waar een scheur in haar bovenarm werd geconstateerd. Dit alles maakte ze in haar eentje door maar desondanks verscheen ze kloek en kranig op eigen houtje bij de bus voor de terugreis. Gelukkig was er een zoon om haar in Enschede op te vangen. Wij hopen dat ze spoedig hertstelt.

De kerstmarkt-excursie is een van de PVI tradities en altijd goed bezocht, dus volgend jaar gaan we weer. Naar ...............?

The christmas excursion in 2016, organised on Friday December 16th, had destination Düsseldorf. The bus was largely odccupied with 40 participants who traversed the old city center and modern shopping center to pay visits to christmas stalls but also shopping malls. The latter was demonstrated by the large number of shopping bags at occasional meets and greets.  One unfortunate accident happend, but the brave Mrs. Vörgers visited the hospital herself and returned by bus with the group. We wish her a swift recovery. Given the fact that the christmas excursion is well attended, and it is a PVI tradition, it will be scheduled again next year. Place to visit  . . . . . ?
