ACTIVITIES ORGANISED IN 2015
- Annual meeting
English Sumary
The annual meeting of the PVI, February 19th 2015, was executed in a breeze. Attending members and the board quickly covered the agenda of course partly due to the fact that finances, annual report etc were adequately prepared. The first result of the PVI Survey (with 117 participants) were discussed and already new/alternative activities were proposed by the board and the attendees. The prize winner amongst the survey participants was Laura who received her gift a couple of days later.
- ITC Sports Day
It was only 32 degrees centigrade, so we were lucky? Well if you compare it to the day before and after (35+ and high humidity) we were lucky. The organisation prepared for the special circumstances with the help of the ITC Management team; they provided all participants with a white ITC cap. It was good to see many did wear the protective cap and did drink during the extended breaks. Despite the fact that all participants were asked and reminded to be present before 4 PM some teams strolled in at 4.30 PM.
The Volleyball competition had only 3 teams giving them the chance to play each other before a decisive final match. A true champion could then be honoured. The Expert Mashing Attempts not only attempted smashing but also managed in their first match against the GFM Team. Unfortunately in their 2nd match against the SADC team with a former Rwandan national team Volleyball player they got beaten. The SADC team also won their match against GFM and thus ESA had the opportunity to smash out SADC in the final. In a exiting thriller SADC won with the smallest margin possible: 25-23.
The soccer competition was executed as usual on the artificial grass, in full sunshine. The Tukkerteam which adjusted to the circumstances (and could adjust to the circumstances playing as a team positioning the players optimally) best deserved a place in the final. In both qualifying matches their goalkeeper did not get passed at all. In the other group things were far less clear; all three teams won 1 match and lost another and all scored as many goals as they got against them. Since ESA team scored the most goals (4) they played against the Tukkerteam in the final. In the final the Tukkerteam changed their approach and rumbled the opponent. Seldom a final was won with such a large difference (0-9). Tukkerteam won all their matches and scored 20-0 goals.
Jeu de Boule had changed location, from the sunny side into the shade. Not the traditional French Plane trees but Dutch oak trees provided shade. However that side of the pitch was covered with grass and so it seemed not all teams were prepared to concur this vegetation. The defending champions, Roelof and Roland - the Chicos Cojones, won all their matches and won the cup again. First they defeated Bitterballen with 13-0. The Bitterballen team annually participate and bring their own set of (bitter)balls. Despite the special preparation (food and liquor) they lost their first two matches. Only against Bikkels, de laatste loodjes they uplifted themselves for a single victory. The only student team, CZ – were they sponsored or is this an acronym of their names Zhang and Chen, started of really good only to be beaten by the 2015 champions. Also Sneu de Boule won one match. The conclusion is justified that behind Chicos Cojones it was a battlefield.
Also in the shade, the 40 m sprint lane was taken by young and old runners. After a hesitant start the coach had to kick the final runners who wanted to attempt their first run (or 9th) from the track to prepare for the final. The children had apparently most energy, some running more frequently than the registration form could handle. It is also nice to see that annually these kids return because they have fun and would like to see how much they improve. And in some cases if they can defeat their parents. Tobias Bakx did do so claiming actually the fastest qualifying time ever (5.12s). Wayhudi ran 5.16s in 2007. His dad and organiser finished in 5.38s. But both were running out of competition in their own family battle. Ajay (the physiotherapist on duty) qualified for the finale in 5.34s followed very closely by Maurice Mugabowindekwe (5.43s) and Stephen Kibet (5.49s). It promised to be a thrilling final. But at the start Maurice had a splendid reaction and accelerated away from both Ajay and Stephen finishing 2nd and 3rd. The female competition had fewer dare devils. Thea Turkington (6.03s and much faster than the year before) and Fangyuan (6.93s) qualified as usual together with mom Jeanna Hyde (7.18). Unfortunately Fangyuan could not participate in the final because of a Quadriceps problem giving Thea the opportunity to defend her title with success.
The Boys and Girls competition showed some really good performances. Linden Alkema tested her skills 8 times running on her socks (8.43s). As soon as her twin brother Fedde did find out that running on socks would actually work out, he ran his fasted time in his 3rd round (7.62s). For the youngest and smallest children some assistance was required since for example Dirk van der velde, age 3!, was too small to trigger the Electronic Timing ;-). Kaden Hecker was once supported by his dad and the decided he could do it on his own (9.32s). Stella (7yr, 8.17s)and Malte Ostermann (5yr, 8.43s) also re-joined beating their 2014 times by > 2 seconds. Roos Verplanke (6yr) ran actually 2 times; once with time (8.90s) and once for the record (her mom). The oldest girls at the starting line was Akashita (11yr) running 6.92s. And just seconds before the track was closed, Timo Erdmann entered the venue. In a straight line from the car park he ran to the starting box to finish his ultimate 40 meter sprint in 7.20s (0.6 s better than in 2014). Despite all their efforts there was no time to organise finales for the Boys and Girls, and with all age differences it was quite hard to select the three best performances per gender.
The 2K run, actually something in the order of 1800m, was scheduled but the participants were reviewed by the organisation and received a very serious instruction to listen to the signals of their body, to have fun and finish with a smile. Soon after the start Maurice took the lead. Initially followed by Stephen and Zemeron (who got treated by the physiotherapist for some Quadriceps problem). Later in the competition Stephen had to let Zemeron go. These three fine runners headed the rest of the pack. or could manual Garcia pick up speed and claim a 3rd rank? he was closing the gap with Stephen but in the end missed him on just 5 seconds (6.51 and 6.56). By that time Maurice, who finished in 6.28 2nd fastest ever under these very difficult circumstances, was already enjoying his drink in the shade together with Zemeron (6.44). Kwabene Asiama (KB) and Nick Hamm were fighting their own competition but Nick did lose out on the final straight (7.20 and 7.23). The only two ladies in competition ran most of the distance together. It looked as if Thea was just waiting to burst away, but the opposite happened. Cathy O'Loan, present at ITC for just a couple of months, claimed the victory in 8.08 (against 8.11s). After 8.34s John R Bergado finished and almost kissed the ground.
Exhausted, heated athletes and supporters then participated in the, again, well organised BBQ. Staff from Rigtersbleek always make an effort, organise shade and make us feel at home. Although the weather circumstances were rather extreme, only very few problems occurred because all athletes and supporters had followed up the safety instructions quite well. Thanks and see you next year.
- Sinterklaas
- Christmas excursion Gelsenkirchen (in Dutch)
