On Tuesday 22 April, NEWS will pay a visit to the University of Twente.
The National Centre of Expertise on Science and Society (NEWS) aims to foster the connection between science and society through better science communication. To achieve this goal NEWS consults with researchers and science communication practitioners on how science communication can be done better. Furthermore, NEWS is a network organisation that aims to bring together de science communication ecosystem, from citizen science to more traditional forms of science communication. As a knowledge broker NEWS stimulates the sharing of experiential and scientific insights into science communication and reaching different publics.
Aim of the visit is to get to know each other better, present and discuss ideas for fostering science communication and engagement, and science-society relationships more general, at the University of Twente and in the public sphere.
Outcomes of this session will be brought in at a meeting with the UT rector and dean BMS.
The programme is as follows:
13:15 – 14:30 Open debate and discussion (RA1315, max 25 places available)
After a short introduction by NEWS and brief pitches of various UT domains that work on science -society relationships, a moderated discussion will take place guided by Anne Dijkstra, lead of the Research Centre for Science Communication and Engagement.
Theme
Science and society are intertwined, however, currently science-society relationships are more frequently challenged. Science communication seems more important than ever in dealing with those challenges. In this meeting we explore and debate what universities and researchers can do to better understand the changes and challenges and how we can deal with them. What can science communication achieve? What do changes and trends say about current roles for universities (such as the UT) and researchers? What role is there for NEWS in this debate? What can we learn from developments? How can we support each other?
