Dutch habits
Three kisses

If a Dutch person kisses you on the cheek three times don’t get any romantic ideas. It is just their way of saying hello (and goodbye). It’s usually reserved for close friends and family. New acquaintances should be greeted with a handshake.

Happy birthday!

'Gefeliciteerd': that's Dutch for happy birthday. A typical Dutch birthday party at someone's home is a unique experience. A look at the chair circle makes you think you've ended up in a group therapy session, but that's quite normal. Take a seat and enjoy a piece of cake with your 'kopje koffie'. If it is your birthday, you will be congratulated several times. And if it is not, you will still be congratulated after all. Birthdays in the office are special because co-workers will remind you to bring in your own cake (taart). At school, the birthday children bring treats for all their classmates.

On your bike!

Cycling is second nature to the Dutch. People cycle more than anywhere in the world because the Netherlands isn’t a big country, everything is close by. Depending on where you are, you can usually drive through the country by car in three to four hours. Going by car is often more expensive, takes longer and you can’t always reach everything as easily.

The Netherlands has a moderate climate with rainfall in every season. The weather can be quite unpredictable, so whenever you are planning to take the bike: do not forget your raincoat!
