Geographical Information Management and Applications (GIMA)

Empowering Tomorrow's Geo-Information Leaders Today: Discover Flexibility, Innovation, and Expertise with MSc GIMA

Geographical information is everywhere and more important than ever. Think of physical planning, risk management, navigation systems, location-based services, movement analysis, augmented reality, the increasing use of maps, and volunteered geographical information.

Joint degree programme

Geographical Information and Management (GIMA) is a joint degree programme delivered by four prestigious universities: University of Twente, Delft University of Technology, Utrecht University, and Wageningen University.

You'll benefit from the expertise of geo-information specialists from across the Netherlands. Since its inception in 2003, GIMA has become one of the most popular and highly rated Master's programmes in geo-information applications and management. Our vibrant community continues to grow, attracting both Dutch and international Bachelor's graduates as well as professionals seeking to advance their careers.

GIMA is a Master’s programme taught in English, available full-time (2 years), part-time (4 years), or through flexible study. The programme includes taught courses, an internship, and research, awarding a total of 120 ECTS credits.

Curriculum

The GIMA programme, offered as blended learning, consists of modules that start with two weeks of on-campus teaching, followed by approximately 12 weeks of distance learning. During this period, you can work from home or your office while staying connected with teachers and fellow students through our e-learning environment. Each module concludes with two examination days at one of the four universities. In the second year, you'll focus on your Master's thesis research project and an internship.

The blended learning approach is particularly appealing as it allows students to live where they prefer and combine studies with other activities such as part-time work or family. However, this flexibility requires strong individual study discipline, as the overall workload is comparable to traditional Master's programmes.

Career prospects

The GIMA programme prepares you to become:

Academic careers

GIMA is a comprehensive Master of Science programme with a strong emphasis on academic and research skills in the first six modules. The individual Master’s thesis research in the second part provides a solid foundation for pursuing a PhD, with exposure to PhD opportunities at four Dutch universities.

Non-academic careers

GIMA graduates have excellent career prospects. The demand for geo-information managers and application specialists is constantly growing. Our graduates find jobs quickly, working in various fields including the private sector (e.g., energy, utility companies, geo-marketing, consulting) and the public sector (e.g., research institutes, municipalities, governmental services). A combination of both sectors is also possible.
