The Land Governance Institute (IGT) has close ties with the PGM department. The PhD candidate Gabriel Pansani Siqueira is the president-director of IGT. Gabriel is currently doing his PhD at PGM department, being supervised by Prof. Jaap Zevenbergen and Dr. Divyani Kohli. He has successfully qualified and has spent some time at ITC, when he participated in the M-GEO Core Courses. His PhD research focus on a Land-tenure Risk Map for Brazil.
Since 2019, the IGT has been a spin-off of this original research group under a new format as a Private Non-Profit Organization so that new work and projects can be conducted on a larger scale, with more transparency, and in contact with other stakeholders of civil society, in addition to academics.
The IGT follows the same ethical and transparent principles that have always been the hallmark of its members, whose actions are guided by the search for adequate Land Governance, an integrated legal and institutional framework that coordinates the use and ownership of land in Brazil. This premise is based on the prior knowledge gained from previous experiences and work, which found a weak governance framework in the country, but with enormous potential that can be stimulated, because, through good land management systems and the improvement of institutional architecture, it is possible to achieve sustainable economic development.
To promote debate and the exchange of experience on these issues in Brazil and around the world, the IGT has taken on the role of coordinator of the International Seminar on Land Governance and Economic Development (SIGTDE), an annual event that has provided a plural space for discussion, bringing together the main players and institutions involved in the issue, promoting important debates and discussions on the subject. ITC staff have been present in a couple of SIGTDE contributing to the discussions on Land issues in Brazil and beyond.
Besides that, IGT seeks to defend social rights related to land ownership and possession, on equal terms, through the protection and guarantees provided by the rule of law. Encouraging sustainable development through appropriate land governance. Promoting ethics, peace, citizenship, human rights, democracy, and other universal values.
Currently IGT’s work is mostly focused on improving Brazilian land governance, generating legal certainty and transparency of ownership and property rights, in line with constitutional principles and international guidelines. Carry out studies, research, and training aimed at public and private agents, seeking to promote and develop public policies aimed at land regularization. Defend, preserve, and conserve the environment through appropriate land management, by offering solutions applied to different land contexts.
