The International Seminar on Land Governance and Economic Development (SIGTDE) is an annual event promoted by the Land Governance Institute. The Seminar was designed to discuss and present papers on land governance and economic development, considering the utmost importance of these topics for Brazil, a country with a vast territory and complex challenges related to land tenure and use. Historically, these seminars have contributed to strengthening inter-institutional projects and international exchange.
Land governance involves the creation and implementation of policies that ensure the right to property, land regularization and the sustainable use of natural resources. In Brazil, where issues such as land grabbing, land conflicts and illegal deforestation are still recurring problems, debating and sharing research on the subject is essential for formulating effective solutions.
SIGTDE provides a space for dialog between researchers, public managers, the private sector and civil society. It allows for the exchange of national and international experiences, which can contribute to the adoption of good practices and more efficient policies. In addition, the presentation of scientific studies and articles encourages innovation and the improvement of territorial management tools, such as the use of geospatial technologies and monitoring systems.
Another important aspect that comes naturally with SIGTDE is the possibility of training professionals and academics. The dissemination of knowledge about land governance and economic development contributes to the training of specialists prepared to work in land regularization, urban and rural planning and the formulation of sustainable public policies.
In addition, by addressing economic development, the annual meetings make it possible to reflect on the impact of land governance on job creation, on valuing the environment and on the country's sustainable growth. Land regularization in Brazil, for example, can stimulate agricultural, industrial and urban investment, promoting greater legal certainty and encouraging entrepreneurship.
Therefore, holding scientific events on land governance and economic development is fundamental to fostering debates, disseminating knowledge and strengthening policies that ensure the sustainable and equitable use of land in Brazil. These meetings represent an opportunity to align diverse interests and drive actions that benefit both the economy and social and environmental justice.
ITC is a formal supporter of the 10th edition of the SIGTDE, which will take place in Belém, in December 2024 and André Mano was a speaker in the Seminar. The following International Seminar on Land Governance and Economic Development will take place in Florianópolis on November 6th and 7th of 2025, and it aims to provide another opportunity for debate and exchange of experiences on land issues in Brazil and around the world. Once again, ITC will be a strategic partner for the event, with the participation of renowned teachers and staff from the university, helping to build bridges among the countries and strengthening the international relationship between universities.
Finally, SIGTDE seeks to create a space for networking between university specialists, as well as public, private and third sector agents, who together seek to promote sustainable development in our country, reinforcing that this is the only annual event in Brazil, as there is no similar space for multidisciplinary discussion on the subject of land governance and economic development in the country.
