Brazilian funding secured to sponsor UDESC Visiting Scientist

Become a high-skilled geospatial professional

The PGM department is thrilled to host candidate Luiz Gustavo Francischinelli Rittl, affiliated with the Graduate Program in Territorial Planning and Socio-Environmental Development (PPGPLAN) at the Santa Catarina State University (UDESC) and the Geoprocessing Laboratory (GeoLab) as Visiting Scientist for the period of one year. He has been selected to undertake part of his PhD at the Department of Urban and Regional Planning and Geo-Information Management, as a sandwich programme. The scholarship, funded by the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES) through the PDSE (Sandwich PhD Programme Abroad) Call No. 26/2024, was awarded to PPGPLAN. His stay is expected to take place after Summer 2025.

The main goal of Gustavo’s visit to ITC is to strengthen his academic training, with a focus on advancing his research on "WebGIS for Territorial Planning and Circular Economy via Zero Waste Methodology: An E-Gov Proposal", under the supervision of Dr. Johannes Flacke. CAPES' support will enable Luiz Gustavo to broaden the scope of his research, collaborate with the ITC team, and incorporate an international perspective, contributing to the consolidation and deepening of his research line.

Quote from Prof. Oliveira, Brazilian supervisor

The 12-month internship at ITC will provide the PhD candidate with a highly enriching scientific experience, allowing him to expand his research and enhance its theoretical and methodological foundations. Under the guidance of a highly qualified team led by Dr. Flacke, Luiz Gustavo will have access to state-of-the-art infrastructure, essential for developing his work. Furthermore, this exchange opportunity will facilitate the transfer of academic knowledge to innovation and technology, directly impacting the startup ZeroWastex (https://zerowastex.com.br/). In this context, ITC, internationally recognized for its excellence, offers an environment conducive to innovation and the practical application of scientific research results.
