Colleagues from the NRS department of the ITC Faculty (University of Twente) are working on a strategic collaboration with the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) (part of the Vrije University Amsterdam). This project aims to explore the opportunities for joint education on topics related to sustainability challenges of land systems.
Three different joint educational ways of collaboration are explored, namely a joint minor, joint MSc course topics and MSc thesis topic exchange. The joint minor aims to connect the Bachelor Earth, Economics and Sustainability at the VU to three different MSc studies, among others to Spatial Engineering at ITC.
A student perspective
To shape this joint education project from a student perspective, our colleague Julia Borgman conducted a workshop with Thomas Groen and Wieteke Willemen for a dozen students from the ITC Faculty. The students created mindmaps in groups to shape how they would like a course to look in terms of content, format, and assessments, and whether these courses would fit at a Bachelor's or a Master's level. When developing an education programme, staff and student input is key. Students provided their perspectives on topics that they think need to come together in education on spatial sustainability challenges, through a survey and in this workshop. The students and staff enjoyed a delicious pizza meal during the workshop.
