NRStories, our legacy to planet Earth
Learn how the Natural Resources Department develops research and projects across the globe. Our mission is the sustainable management of the biosphere by using Earth observation data and spatial information (such as satellite images and remote sensing).
GeoForge supports data-friendly users within authorities, responders and NGOs, insurance, and engineering firms to rapidly assess damage from natural disasters, analyze previous risks and predict the upcoming ones by mapping critical infrastructure by removing technical barriers and improving accessibility, unlike traditional geospatial software.
NRS researchers found that over the past 22 years, some forest areas of the Netherlands have experienced a notable drop in soil pH, with some plots reaching the acidity of household vinegar. The news is concerning, as these levels pose threats to forest health and biodiversity.
The Busathon Join Event was the first time the students from all GEM MSc tracks met. After starting the programme at different universities, the international students come together in the Netherlands for this "Hackathon in a bus".
For their innovative solution for oyster farmers, the group "Lemon" was selected as the winner of the Busathon 2023.
Zhaoyang Yu has a big passion for wildlife conservation. Now, at the NRM Specialization, he is making his dreams come true with his MSc thesis research to prevent cars from driving off-road in safaris, which endangers the habitat of wild animals.

During my PhD, I used open-source biodiversity data to study macrofungal diversity and distribution in Europe. In Europe, especially nowadays, there is an increase of open-source data, for example from citizen science and even museums. That data has invaluable information about species distribution, and we have been able to gather it from 8 different European countries
