Reducing the impact of flooding in Kazakhstan

AES Assitant Professor, Dr. Bastian van den Bout, was invited to join the Dutch Disaster Risk REduction and Surge support (DRRS) mission to Kazakhstan, co-organized by the Dutch and Kazakh authorities.

The mission is an effort to exchange knowledge and approaches on reducing flood impact, in particular following the spring 2024 floods in Kazakhstan. Various modelling and forecasting tools were presented and discussed, including the FastFlood model. Six different ministries attended, with a focus on water resources, hydrological forecasting, space, spatial planning and emergency operation.
