On Tuesday 27 June, ITC's Ellen-Wien Augustijn and CDR Visiting Researcher, Shaheen Abdulkareem delivered a workshop on Agent-based Modelling and Disaster Resilience. The application of the method was presented from the perspective of disaster resilience using three example case studies.
The application of agent-based modelling (ABM) in evacuation, epidemics, and floods were discussed in detail. The workshop was attended by students and staff conducting research related to disaster resilience at ITC. Ellen-Wien provided overview of Geo-Simulation components using ABM and the interaction within these components. The hands on exercises led by Shaheen looked at various case studies, including the evacuation of the ITC building, shelters in Dominica during a hurricane and Covid-19 modelling in the Netherlands.
Irene Manzella, Head of the CDR "found the workshop truly inspiring as the ABM technology can be used from so many perspective and can revolutionize the policies related to disaster risk reduction as it can consider all aspects and interaction of various factors simultaneously.” Another attendee remarked “The training provided in this workshop on ABM will be very useful in my research in efficient modelling of flood hazard”.
