Enschede, a distinctive, modern and lively university town well used to welcoming international students lies on the eastern border of the Netherlands. Besides the familiar large department stores, a number of specialist shops can be found in the city centre. Every Tuesday and Saturday is market day on the spacious Van Heekplein. On Saturday, the busiest day, there are no less than 160 market stalls selling quality goods: not only fresh fruit, vegetables, meat and fish, but also leatherware, clothes, music and Mediterranean delicacies.
